Algiers, November 17, 2016 (SPS) - The international community continues to support to a just and lasting settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara, which will guarantee the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination in accordance with resolutions of United Nations.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed on Monday - following his meeting with Morocco's King Mohamed VI on the sidelines of the Cop22 in Marrakech, Morocco - "The importance of advancing the process of negotiations in Western Sahara as provided for in the relevant Security Council resolutions".
The resumption of the negotiations was demanded by the Security Council, which underlined in its resolution (2285) of 2016 extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum on Self-Determination in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to 2017, the importance of continuing the process of preparation for a fifth round of negotiations on the final status of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa.
The Security Council also informed the UN chief to submit at least two reports a year to inform him of the progress of the negotiations leading to a referendum for the self-determination of the Saharawi people.SPS
