EUCOCO sharpens strategy for more solidarity with Sahrawi people

Vitry-Sur-Seine (France), Oct 23, 2017 (SPS)  – The 42rd session of EUCOCO, being held on Saturday and Sunday in Vitry-sur-Seine (Southern suburb of Paris) laid the foundations of a strategy to broaden the solidarity with the Sahrawi people, who are fighting for the right to independence and self-determination.
Various speakers during the meeting said that a task force should marshal the "promising" actions towards the countries, the institutions, parliamentarians and associations that give less interest to the question of Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco since 1975.
Former UN envoy for Western Sahara (2005-2007), Francesco Bastagli insisted that "a lot remain to be done" at the UN bodies, notably the UN Assembly General and Fourth Committee.
Facing the impasse caused by France’s veto to Security Council resolutions that are against Morocco, Bastagli said that we must work to "build a global opinion" on the sufferings of the Sahrawi people, who, however, the international law is on their side.
He noted the lack of quality of work of the UN Fourth Decolonization Committee, stating that the petition is "limited" because "there is no action" that follows.
In the same regard, Vice-president of the European Parliament’s Inter-group "peace in Western Sahara," Paloma Lopez proposed to bring together all the parliamentary groups from all over the world that support the Sahrawi cause so to constitute a genuine pressure on governments for the application of the international law.
Moreover, Mohamed Sidati, Sahrawi minister, Polisario Front representative to Europe called for actions in Europe to challenge the European Union and its institutions regarding their responsibility in blocking the application of the international law. (SPS)
