Algiers, 12 October 2020 (SPS) – Forty-five years after the proclamation of national unity, the Saharawis remain committed to their right to self-determination while this process remains deadlocked due to Moroccan obstacles.
On October 12, 1975, in the moment when Spain, a former colonial power, was preparing to leave Western Sahara, the representatives of the Sahrawi people held a meeting to decide on the continuation of the struggle for national liberation against a new occupier, namely, Morocco.
On that day, all the participants, including the Sahrawi notables who formed the General Assembly created by Spain, proclaimed their membership in the Polisario Front as the one and only legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people.
A solidarity day commemorating this event is being held in Algiers on Monday, with the participation of a number of political and diplomatic officials and personalities, party leaders and representatives of civil society.
This day is punctuated by lectures, a photo exhibition in addition to the presentation of new books on Western Sahara, according to the Sahrawi embassy in Algiers, organizer of the event in collaboration with the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi people (CNASPS). (SPS)
