New York (United Nations) 13 December 2020 (SPS)- The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, affirmed yesterday that the solution to the conflict of Western Sahara does not depend on individual states’ recognitions, but on the implementation of UN’s resolutions.
Answering a question following Climate Ambition Summit yesterday, Guterres asserted that for the UN “in relation to Western Sahara, everything remains as it was. And the solution of Western Sahara does not depend on recognitions by individual states. Depends on the implementation of Security Council resolutions, of which we are the guardians.”
It should be recalled that outgoing President, Donald Trump, in a new widely contested statement, recognised Moroccan illegal occupation of Western Sahara last Thursday, in counterpart of Moroccan normalisation of diplomatic relations with Israel.
Many international organisations, countries, political parties and individual legislators and politicians rejected the move and criticised Trump’s new violation of the international law, estimating for many of them that it is only complicating the situation for the future administration, and depriving the US from its required neutrality as a Permanent member of the UN Security Council.
