Djanet (Algeria)- A regional conference on Western Sahara conflict will open Sunday in Djanet (Illizi, 1850-km southeast of Algiers) to address the security and political challenges related to the conflict and means to strengthen the internal front against these challenges.
The participants in the conference, organized at the initiative of the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) in response to the request of local civil society, will debate "the recent developments in the Sahrawi question and the current related challenges," the organizers told APS.
The conference, which will take place at the cultural centre of Djanet, will focus on the main historic stages of the Western Sahara conflict, as the last decolonization issue in Africa, the recent visit of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the Sahrawi refugee camps and the liberated Sahrawi territories, as well as the Moroccan manoeuvres aiming at undermining the efforts for peaceful resolution of the conflict, in addition to the security and political challenges related to Western Sahara and means to strengthen the internal front to face these challenges, said the organizers.
Many experts, academics, political and security analysts and specialists in international relations and international human right will participate in the meeting.
The conference, which will be held on the eve of the UN Security Council's meeting, scheduled for 28 April and devoted to the extension of the mandate of the UN Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), will be an opportunity to examine the consequences of the unilateral decision of Morocco to impose drastic cut in staff at the UN mission, in violation of the ceasefire agreement signed by the two sides to the conflict (Polisario Front and Morocco) in 1991.
