Smara (Refugees Camps), Feb 27, 2017 (SPS) - Sahrawi president and Polisario Front General Secretary Brahim Ghali said that the announcement of Morocco to withdraw its troops from Western Sahara’s Al Guergarat region was a maneuver and a diversion.
He added that the Moroccan occupier should assume the impacts of its colonial practices that may compromise the ceasefire.
The Sahrawi president, who chaired the opening of the festivities marking the 41st anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), said that the Moroccan announcement of withdrawing of some meters its forces from Al Guergarat represented a violation of the territory status and the cease-fire agreement concluded in 1991, as part of the UN-African settlement plan.
For Ghali, the present situation and its consequences is the responsibility of Morocco only, caused by its colonialist practices that not only endanger ceasefire but also peace, security and stability in the region as a whole.
The Polisario chief asked the UN secretary general and the Security Council to adopt tangible and direct measures, so to end the Moroccan violations of the international law and accelerate a democratic just and lasting solution through the completion of the UN-African settlement plan of 1991 providing for the organization of self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
He also recalled that Spain as former Western Sahara’s administering power must assume its responsibility in allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise its self-determination right.
Ghali called upon France to play a historical role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council by supporting the democratic option in the settlement of the conflict. (SPS)
