Algiers, December 2018 (SPS) - Nayat Ahmed Abdeslam’s “Bidun Hawiya” (Sahrawis without nationality), a short film on the ordeal of the Sahrawi nationals in Spain to have a nationality, was presented Wednesday, in Algiers, as part of the 9th International Film Festival of Algiers (FICA), in the presence its director.
A Sahrawi-Spanish co-production, the film features in 20 minutes the issue of losing identity of the people of Spain’s last colony and currently occupied by Morocco, emphasizing all the difficulties to have a nationality.
These Sahrawis, former citizens of the Spanish colony, don’t have another choice but to aspire to a stateless status (a person without a legal nationality) or a Spanish nationality.
For his part, the ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) to Algeria Abdekader Taleb Omar affirmed that the stateless status is a “temporary measure” to overcome the circumstance and defend the Sahrawi identity.
He underlined that the screening of “Bidun Hawiya” coincides with the holding in Geneva on 5-6 December of an initial roundtable to relaunch the negotiations on Western Sahara. (SPS)
