Algiers, June 1, 2011 (SPS) - A caravan carrying 30,000 school kits for the benefit of the children in the Saharawi refugee camps has departed Tuesday from Algiers.

Thirty semi-trailers have been mobilized for this campaign of solidarity organized on the occasion of the celebration of International Children's Day, organizers said.

The President of the Algerian Red Crescent (ARC), M. Hadj Hamou Benzeguir, underlined that this donation is an initiative of the ARC in collaboration with the Ministry of National Solidarity and Family and the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Saharawi people (CNASPS).

These school kits, for the pupils of primary schools, consist of school bags and all necessary school supplies, they added.

The President of CNASPS, Mr. Mehrez Lamari, indicated, from his part, that the caravan aims to support the rights of Sahrawi children to education and knowledge. He added that this donation is “continuation of humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugee camps, and carries a "message of respect, consideration and support from the Algerian people to the Saharawi people fighting for its legitimate right to self-determination."

From his part, the Saharawi Ambassador in Algiers, Brahim Ghali, welcomed the "laudable initiative which falls within, he said, the values of brotherhood, solidarity and generosity of the Algerian people." He stressed that this operation will help relieve the Saharawi families spending on school supplies to 30,000 Saharawi children. (SPS)
