U.S. continues to supporting peaceful solution in Western Sahara (Clinton

Washington, Jan 15, 2012 (SPS) - The U.S. Secretary of State, Ms. Hillary Clinton, said Thursday that the United States continued to support efforts to find “a peaceful, sustainable and mutually agreed upon solution to the conflict of Western Sahara,” speaking at a press conference with the Algerian Foreign Minister, Mr. Mourad Medelci, on the sidelines of the ceremony of awarding the presidency of the G77 from Argentina to Algeria.

Ms. Clinton indicated that the U.S. “support efforts to find a peaceful, sustainable and mutually agreed upon solution to the conflict of Western Sahara.”

She also said that U.S. support the negotiations carried out by the United Nations between the Polisario Front and Morocco.

From his part, the Algerian Foreign Minister, Mr. Mourad Medelci, said that the question of Western Sahara has been addressed with Ms. Clinton on two levels, highlighting that the first level “attached to the relations with the brotherly country Morocco, where Ms. Clinton briefed the developments recorded since several months ago in the relations between Algeria and Morocco. And then on the issue of Arab Maghreb, where we should not forget our brothers in Western Sahara, where their issue being addressed at the level of UN and will continue to be addressed also between the directly two concerned countries.”

“We hope that the forthcoming meetings between the Frente Polisario and Morocco will enable them to find an area of understanding in the framework of the respect for international legitimacy and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.” (SPS)
