“We cannot set up a united Maghreb Union without resolving Western Sahara issue,” underlines Algerian Official

Algeria, Feb 13, 2012 (SPS) - Mr. Jamal Abdul Salam, leader of the New Algeria Front (FAN), confirmed Sunday, in a ceremony organized by Al-Chourouk Newspaper honoring the Tunisian President on the occasion of his visit to Algeria, “we cannot build a united Arab Maghreb Union without resolving the Western Sahara issue.”

Mr. Abdul Salam indicated that the success of Marzouki’s effort to construct a united Arab Maghreb Union “depends on resolving the outstanding issues, including completing the decolonization of Western Sahara,” calling in this regard for seriously addressing these files for debate among the active players in the Region, in order to find a practical, just and objective solution as soon as possible.

From his part, Dr. Ahmed Adimi underlined that the Maghreb countries “hold Algeria responsible for the failure of the Union project, because of its principled position on Western Sahara,” highlighting that Algeria is “positive party in the Maghreb building process and not the reason behind its obstruction.”

In relevant context, the General Commander of the Algerian Muslim scouts, Mr. Noureddine Ben Braham, added that the resurrection of the Maghreb Union is “an urgent need in a world of blocs,” noting that the success of the Tunisian President efforts to revive the Union “is mainly linked to the existence of an atmosphere can accommodate such approach and goals.”

He also called for a settlement to all the outstanding issues between countries of the Region in the framework of the common interest and realization of justice, democracy and human rights, stressing on the need to resolve the Saharawi cause, at the UN level or even at the level of the Maghreb.
