Madrid, March 31, 2012 (SPS) - The Polisario Representative in Spain, Mr. Bashraya Hamudi Bayun, received Friday at headquarters of the Spanish Popular Party, ruling party, by its Secretary of Foreign Policy, Mr. José Ramón Garcia, according to a Saharawi diplomatic source.

During the meeting, the Spanish Official confirmed PP’s compromise, adopted during last November elections, to defend a solution in the framework of the United Nations that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to free expression, taking into consideration the historical responsibility of Spain in the region.

In relevant context and in an interview with the Spanish Press Agency (EFE), Polisario Representative to the UN, Boukhari Ahmed, reaffirmed the Polisario call to receive its leaders like the rest of parties to discuss the contribution of Spain in the settlement of Western Sahara conflict, saying “we really know that Spanish government has priorities such as Europe and meeting the crisis, but after the crisis being overcame, the government should consider the strategic priorities mainly the Arab Maghreb, because Spain was a part of the problem and must be a part of the solution,” referring to its role as a colonial power in the region.

The Saharawi Diplomat called on Madrid to adopt “balanced policy” on Western Sahara conflict between the main parties to the conflict, Morocco and Polisario Front, adding that since the President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, has visited Rabat and a number of Moroccan ministers visited Madrid, as well Spain heard Morocco’s position “so in the framework of equilibrium, Madrid must receive leadership of the Polisario Front.”

He also recalled that PP affirmed, when in opposition, its absolute support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination through a referendum supervised by the United Nations, in order not to spread disappointment among the Saharawis in the new Spanish government. (SPS)
