Sidney, May 13, 2012 (SPS) - A delegation of the Saharawi Workers Union (UGTSARIO) is making a working visit to Australia to participate at the annual symposium of the Australian Green Left Weekly and general congress of the Council of Trade Unions held in Sydney from 15 to 17 May, informed a source from the delegation.
The delegation, which is led by UGTSARIO Secretary General Mr. Mohamed Skeikh Mohamed Lahbib, received Saturday by the Weekly’s board of management and journalists within the framework of commemoration of its 21st anniversary in the presence of many dignitaries and civil society organizations of Australia, in addition to the Ambassador of Venezuela.
Addressing the opening ceremony on behalf of the delegation, Mr. Mohamed Skeikh Mohamed Lahbib spoke about history of the Saharawi cause and UN Peace Plan between Polisario Front and Morocco, calling attention of the attendees to the siege and noose imposed the Moroccan occupation on the occupied territories of Western Sahara, in addition to the repression, maltreatment and prosecution of the Saharawis.
He also called all to visit occupied Western Sahara and closely stop at the reality of Sahrawi political prisoners incarcerated in Moroccan prisons and ill-treatment and inhuman practices they experience.
The delegation includes POLISARIO representative to Australia, Mr. Kamal Fadel, and Saharawi activist from the occupied territories, Malak Amidane.
Australian Green Left Weekly is one of the media outlets that consistently shed light on the struggle of the Saharawi people along Australia, where it conducted investigative reports from the Sahrawi refugee camps and occupied territories. In addition, its correspondents had subjected to arrest, investigation and surveillance by Moroccan authorities. (SPS)
