New York, June 16, 2012 (SPS) - The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has reaffirmed its commitment to the self-determination of Saharawi people, in an intervention by Mr. Jorge Valero, Permanent REpresentative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the UN on the matter of Western Sahara in the UN Special Committee of Decolonization in New York.
Ms. Valero noted that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela calls for the respect and protection of human rights of the Saharawi people, and appealed to the Special Committee that, at its next session, to give more focus to the discussion on the question of Western Sahara.
The Representative considered that the UN Special Committee “should approve the proposal to appoint a group to visit the territory, thereby providing updated information about how decolonization was actually perceived.”
“Venezuela hopes that a more intense phase of negotiations under auspices of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, Ambassador Christopher Ross, being start, and the implementation of the various United Nations resolutions been ensured,” said the Venezuelan Representative to UN.
Mr. Jorge Valero said in this regard that his country “welcomes the Resolution 66/86 of December 11, 2012, adopted by the General Assembly, which reiterates the need to permanently eliminate colonialism, racial discrimination and violations of fundamental human rights.”
Moreover, the Venezuelan ambassador emphasized the need to organize the referendum in Western Sahara based promptly “on the relevant and applicable decisions of the organs of the United Nations under the international Charter and law” in order that the Saharawi people decide their future. (SPS)
