El Aaiun (occupied territories), August 25, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights (RFK Center), Ms. Kerry Kennedy, and the delegation accompanying her arrived Friday night in the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, amid a media and security blackout.
The delegation was received by a group of Saharawi political prisoners including Ms. Aminatou Haidar amid a tight encirclement by Moroccan intelligence agents in civilian dress, informed a media source from the city.
The source added that the city’s airport witnessed a heavy security deployment moments before arrival of the delegation. In addition, eyewitnesses noted that there was an intensive spread of intelligence agents in civilian clothes in interior cafe of the airport.
President of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights (RFK Center), Ms. Kerry Kennedy, is leading a human rights delegation with distinguished international human rights advocates to the occupied territories of Western Sahara and Sahrawi refugee camps from August 24 to 31, 2012.
“Our delegation will seek to assess the human rights situation on the ground by speaking to human rights defenders, government authorities, and ordinary families split apart by this conflict,” said Kennedy.
“We hope to raise attention to this issue and support the establishment of a human rights mandate for the UN Mission,” he added. (SPS)
