Geneva, Sept 7, 2012 (SPS) - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan E. Méndez, is going to visit the occupied territories of Western Sahara and Morocco from 14 to 21 September, 2012 to prepare a comprehensive report about the violations of human rights in the world, informed a source diplomatic source from Geneva.
Media underlined that the visit comes in a time when Moroccan occupation authorities try to “cover the miserable conditions experienced by the Saharawi political prisoners in the prisons of Morocco.”
The Moroccan authorities have carried out movement in a number of prisons, including Black jail in occupied El Aaiun, in an attempt “to alleviate the situation of tension and anger” among the prisoners, especially the hunger strikes held these days by the Saharawi political prisoners in Black jail, before visit of the UN official, the same source told SPS.
In relevant context, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights expected to send a delegation to the occupied territories of Western Sahara to assess the situation of human rights during the second half of this month, according to a source of SADR Embassy in Addis Ababa to SPS.
An international delegation, headed by the President of Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights Ms. Kerry Kennedy, called Monday, in a preliminary observations about the violations of human rights committed by Moroccan state in the occupied Western Sahara following a visit on 24-31 Sept to the Saharawi occupied territories and refugee camps, to accelerate the establishment of “a permanent international mechanism of human rights of the Saharawi people.” (SPS)
