Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), Sept 16, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, called on the French President François Hollande to exert pressure on the Moroccan government in order to live-up to its commitments and recognize right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, through implementing resolutions of the UN and Security Council.
“France, the country of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, cannot and must not remain indifferent to the serious and systematic violations of human rights committed by the Moroccan occupying forces in Western Sahara, which is widely condemned and documented by international organizations,” said President Mohamed Abdelaziz, in a letter to French President.
He stressed on the need for France to confront the intransigence of Morocco and the many obstacles it places in face of the peace process, adding that France, member of the Security Council, which is responsible for peace and security in the world, should play a crucial role in the search for a just and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.
“The resolution of this conflict inevitably consolidates peace and freedom in the region and contributes to the release of resources needed to strengthen the Maghreb Arab,” added President of the Republic.
Saharawi President therefore reiterated “the commitment of the Polisario Front to cooperate loyally with the United Nations and to open a responsible and constructive dialogue for the implementation of UN resolutions, to enable the Saharawi people to freely choose their future through the organization of a free and democratic referendum on self-determination,” recalling in this regard to the “contribution of France, especially Left and Communist Parties, to establish democracy and right of peoples to decide their future.”
Two decades ago, noted the letter, the UN adopted two historic resolutions 658 (1990) and 690 (1991), which led to the establishment of MINURSO, its primary purpose remains that of the organization and supervision of a referendum on self-determination, which is the only way to ensure the just and lasting peace in Western Sahara.
