Brussels, Nov 16, 2012 (SPS) - A number of European deputies reiterated call on Morocco to comply with the international legitimacy and resolution of the United Nations that call for the right of Saharawi people to self-determination, responding to allegations by Morocco Parliament’s president during the Foreign Affairs Committee’s session on Monday.
The deputies expressed deep concern over the state of human rights and repression in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
“International law and United nations are obvious concerning Saharawi issue; they are not in favour of Moroccan proposal. Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory, still pending decolonization,” underlined the MP Willy Meyer from the United Left.
He added that the Moroccan government fabricates problems before the European Union, recalling that he had already tried in vain to visit the occupied territories of Western Sahara, in the last time Moroccan security resorted to the use of force against him.
Speaking of behalf of the European Liberal Group, the MP and former Slovenian Foreign Minister Mr. Evo Vogel asked Morocco to stop violating human rights in the occupied Western Sahara and releasing the Saharawi political prisoners.
From her part, the spokeswoman for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Ana Gomes expressed concern over the attack on the Saharawi activist Aminatou Haidar and expulsion of European activists from occupied El Aaiun, adding that such practices will not help to find a solution to the Saharawi issue.
