Paris, March 10, 2013 (SPS) - The Senator Pierre Laurent, National Secretary of the Communist Party of France (French acronym; PCF ) called upon the French Foreign Minister Mr. Laurent Fabius to intervene to cancel the sentences rendered on 18 Febcby Moroccan Military Tribunal in Rabat against 25 Saharawi activists.
“I have the honor to draw your attention to the sentences rendered by the military court in Rabat on February 18 against 24 Saharawi activists, following the serious incidents caused by the dismantling of Gdeim Izik camp on October 2010 by Moroccan forces,” wrote Mr. Laurent, in a letter sent to French FM, a copy of it reached SPS.
“The right to self-determination of the Saharawi people cannot continue to be violated. Convictions against these activists should be reconsidered. We demand their release,” said the Senator of Paris.
He also recalled that “this judgment has caused political consternation and indignation among the observers, human rights organizations, and all those committed to respect the right of peoples to self-determination.”
“In fact, this trial raises once again the question of the status of Western Sahara, which, in the eyes of the international community and the United Nations, is considered a territory where Morocco cannot exercise any sovereignty,” he added.
He therefore indicated that France cannot remain indifferent to this situation the Moroccan authorities bear full responsibility for. (SPS)
