Latest UN resolution affirms importance of improving human rights situation in occupied Western Sahara, says Mr. Addouh

Algiers, April 28, 2013 (SPS) - The President of the Saharawi National Council Mr. Khatri Addouh welcomed the latest UN resolution that affirms the importance of improving the situation of human rights in the occupied Western Sahara, saying “Western Sahara issue is a question of decolonization which can only be resolved through the exercise of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.”


Speaking at the International Parliamentary Symposium of Solidarity with the Saharawi people held Saturday in Algiers, Mr. Addouh said that the holding of this conference comes in a circumstance by which the Saharawi cause witnesses an international political momentum.


The Saharawi official praised the strong positions of Algeria with the legitimate struggle of the Saharawi people and the international movement of support to the Saharawi people in their struggle for self-determination and independence.


Confirming that the Frente POOLISARIO is sole legitimate representative of the Saharawi people and a founding member of the African Union, he pointed out to the repeated violations of human rights in Western Sahara by the Moroccan authorities and the continuing repression of Saharawi activists, protests and manifestations, recalling in this regard to the sentences pronounced by Rabat military trial against 25 Saharawi militants.


He, on other hand, called on Morocco to respect international charters and the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination.


Mr. Addouh called on social actors, including parliamentarians and party members, to contribute to the resort to reason, logic law away from history outbidding and fallacies in order to stand on the reality of Saharawi issue to change the situation in the region starting from a settlement on the basis of the respect for the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.


He therefore expressed readiness to work together in this direction and cooperate in the framework of the United Nations in order to accelerate the final and just solution to the Saharawi cause. (SPS)
