Montevideo, Oct 5, 2013 (SPS) - The Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the University of the Republic of Uruguay hosted Friday a conference under the theme “the Spanish and Hassanya, story of an encounter”, presented by the First Secretary of SADR Embassy in Uruguay Mohamed Salem Abdelfatah.

In his lecture, Saharawi official highlighted the relationship between the Spanish language Hassanya dialect over a century of Spanish colonialism, stressing in this regard that this process of incorporation and assimilation of new words from Spanish to Hassanya “has not completed, because Spanish is still accompanying Hassanya in Western Sahara.”

Mr. Mohamed Salem stressed the importance of Spanish as the language of Saharawi culture and identity, explaining how the Spanish, despite the behavior of Spain and its governments with the Saharawi people, has become a weapon in the Saharawi struggle.

He went on saying that Spanish language is a mean of communication with Spanish-speaking countries, adding that it is “a mean to get in touch with Latin America and the diversity of its countries and cultures.”

This conference is part of the programme “the Second Meeting Festlatino Montevideo, Neo-Latin Languages and Cultures.” (SPS)
