London, Feb 26, 2014 (SPS) - A group of British parliamentarians have sent a letter to the Prime Minister David Cameron, urging him to work in favour of including human rights monitoring to the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), when to be renewed next April.
The members of UK parliaments who signed on the letter are : Mr. Jeremy Corbyn, President of All-Party Parliamentary Group on Western Sahara (APPG) and head of the delegation which visited the occupied Saharawi territories last week, Mr. Mark Williams, Liberal-Democrat MP and APPG’s Secretary, M. John Hillary, President of the British NGO War on Want, and Mr. John Gurr, coordinator of Western Sahara Campaign in the UK.
It was also signed by Mr. Limam Mohamed Ali, Polisario Front’s Representative to the UK, Mr. Brahim Dahane, Saharawi activist, and Ken Ritchie, Western Sahara campaign in the UK.
The MPs noted that MINURSO remains the only UN Mission in the world does not include human rights mechanism, a thing, said the letter, which would have negative impact either on the human rights situation in Western Sahara or on the prospects for a peaceful settlement to the conflict. (SPS)
