Boujdour (refugee camps), March 26, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi National Committee for Human Rights has expressed “full readiness” to cooperate with all actors at home and abroad in the aim to promote and upgrade human rights, as to put into action the tasks entrusted to it.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its establishing general gathering on Tuesday, the Committee called upon the Security Council of the UN to assume its responsibilities towards the protection of the Saharawi people in occupied Western Sahara, through working to extend the mandate of the MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to include the protection of human rights.

It also denounced the systematic violations of human rights and ill-treatment practices committed against the innocent Saharawis by the Moroccan occupying state, urging the UN Council of Human Rights to apply the recommendations set forth by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Méndez, with respect to the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

The Saharawi Committee asked the international bodies and organizations to bring, in the framework of the Universal Jurisdiction, Moroccan state to account for the acts of torture, kidnapping and assassination it carries out against unarmed Saharawi citizens.

It, furthermore, stressed the need to send international committees to probe on the serious violations of human rights committed in the occupied territories of Western Sahara by Morocco.

The statement demanded the immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners and allows access into the occupied Western Sahara for international observers, personalities and parliamentary delegations. (SPS)
