Washington, April 1, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi activist of human rights Mrs. Aminatou Haidar continues her visit to the United States of America, where she was received by various committees of the U.S. Congress.
Aminatou Haidar, also President of the Collective of Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA ), was received in this regard by the U.S. congress external relations’ committee.
The meeting focused on the grave situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, plunder of Saharawi natural resources and the ways to raise public awareness on the urgent need to protect the Saharawi civilians from Moroccan repression and to the decolonization of the last colony in Africa.
The Sahrawi activist demanded an immediate cease of the systematic repression and arbitrary arrests perpetrated by the Moroccan state, calling for the release of all Saharawi political prisoners and the dismantling of the Moroccan wall of shame.
She, moreover, called for the need to include a human rights mechanism to the MINURSO, like all UN peacekeeping missions in the world, appealing to accelerate the implementation of UN resolutions calling for the inalienable rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination .
This meeting was attended by Ms. Kerry Kennedy, President of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. (SPS)
