Italy’s Senate asks government to work for human rights monitoring in Western Sahara

Rome, April 3, 2014 (SPS) - The Italian Senate has unanimously urged government to work for the extension of MINURSO mandates to include the monitoring of human rights in Western Sahara, as to increase humanitarian assistance provided for the Saharawi refugees.


In a motion submitted by the Italian parliamentary inter-group of friendship with the Sahrawi people, Italy’s Senate called for opening Western Sahara territory to international observers and journalists.


It also called upon the Italian government to deal with Polisario Front office in Rome as the sole and legitimate representative of the Saharawi people.


Approved by all political parties within the Italian Senate, the motion called for more action with European partners for the respect of human rights in the occupied part of Western Sahara.


Responding on behalf of the government, deputy foreign minister recalled to the attention given by the Italian government to the Saharawi cause, especially the respect for human rights and international legitimacy.


The session, which closed a few minutes ago, was attended by Polisario Front Representative in Italy Mr. Amih Omar Buzeid. (SPS)
