Shaheed Hafed, May 20, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi people celebrates Tuesday the 41th anniversary of the launch of the armed struggle under the leadership of the Polisario Front, May 20, 1973, against the Spanish colonialism which in 1975 ceded Western Sahara to Morocco and Mauritania through the Tripartite Agreement of Madrid.
The Polisario Front waged a war against the new occupants, while Mauritania was forced to retire in 1979 and signed a peace agreement with the Polisario Front in Algiers, the liberation war against Morocco continued until September 6, 1991 when a cease-fire was signed between the two parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and Morocco under the auspices of the UN and the establishment a UN mission for the referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), which has been impossible due to obstacles of Morocco.
Since 2005 a peaceful resistance is triggered in the occupied territories of Western Sahara to demand the referendum on self-determination promised by the UN and the international community for over 23 years, respect for human rights in the territories under the Moroccan occupation and stop the plundering of Western Sahara natural resources.
Resistance continues to be brutally repressed by the Moroccan forces. violations of human rights have been reported and documented by international organizations and human rights bodies and more recently by the UN Secretary General in his latest report to the Security Council on the situation in Western Sahara.
Ban Ki-moon also called for a revision of the negotiation process since 2007 between the two parties, if by April 2015 no progress has been registered in finding a solution to the conflict. (SPS)
