International Campaign against Moroccan Occupation Wall in Western Sahara launches its website

Madrid, May 27, 2014 (SPS) - The International Campaign against the Wall of the Moroccan Occupation in Western Sahara launched today, Tuesday, its website (www.removethewall.org) to raise awareness of the international public opinion about the dangers of the Moroccan occupation-built wall in Western Sahara.

The four-language site contains an introduction to the campaign, a background to the conflict, an overview of the history of the construction of the Moroccan wall in Western Sahara, its structure as well as its multiple effects on the Saharawi civilians on both sides of the wall.

The site also includes basic facts about landmines in Western Sahara and the situation of victims of landmines and explosive remnants of war in addition to studies and legal documents relating to international legislation on landmines and cluster munitions.

The organizers of the campaign presented the new website and the associated social media as an interactive forum for the exchange of information and experiences among all local and international actors participating in the campaign.

It is also hoped that it would help raise international public opinion of the wall of Moroccan occupation (also known as the Wall of Shame) as a heinous crime against the right of the Sahrawi people.

It is well known that the wall of the Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara, which is infested with over 7 million landmines, still poses a great danger to Sahrawi civilian population on both sides of the wall, despite the on-going UN-supervised ceasefire in Western Sahara, which came into effect on 6 September 1991.

In addition to its enduring humanitarian, social, economic, political, legal and environmental effects, the wall also represents a persistent crime against the human rights of the Sahrawi people and a major impediment to the realization of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The International Campaign against the Wall of the Moroccan Occupation in Western Sahara was launched last year in the aims to gather all possible international support to force Morocco to demilitarize its wall of occupation in Western Sahara, neutralize and remove the entire arsenal of destruction that it contains including landmines and explosive remnants of war.
