Shaheed Hafed, July 6, 2014 (SPS) - The union of Saharawi Journalists and Writers (UPES in Spanish) condemned "forcefully" the arrest on Friday of Saharawi journalist and TVRASD correspondent Mahmoud Lhaisan by the Moroccan police in the occupied city of El Aaiun, in a statement.
It described the arrest as "unfair and unacceptable" and held the Moroccan authorities responsible for the consequences that may result.
UPES added that "this act is part of a campaign by the Moroccan services intended to prevent the noble mission of journalists to inform the public of serious human rights violations committed by Morocco in the occupied Western Sahara" territories, calling for the immediate release of the Saharawi journalist.
It expressed its "support and solidarity with the Saharawi journalist Mahmoud Elhaissan and all Saharawi journalists who are at risk to accomplish their noble mission."
UPES called all world organizations and international bodies to intervene with Morocco to allow protection and respect for freedom of the press. (SPS)
