Western Sahara: New round of negotiation depends on success of Ross next visit

Awserd (Refugee Camps), August 26, 2014 (SPS) - The opening of a new round of negotiation between the Polisario Front and Morocco will depend on the success of the next visit of the United Nations Secretary General's special envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, said the member of Polisario Front's Secretariat General and coordinator of the UN Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

During the meeting with the delegations participating in the 2nd Congress of the Union of Students of Seguia El Hamra and Rio de Oro, Kheddad underlined that a new round would decide on the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. The Security Council "must assume its responsibilities" if Ross would not be able to visit the Western Sahara particularly face to the intransigence of Morocco, which continues to disregard the international law, he added.

As regards the broadening of Minurso's mandate to human rights monitoring, Kheddad said that this is an ineluctable necessity given the dramatic reality of Sahrawi people.

The Sahrawi official also denies the rumour reported by some media that Ross resigned. (SPS)
