London, Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi community in the United Kingdom has called upon the United Nations to ensure protection for innocent people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, said the Polisario Front office in London.

In a ceremony held Wednesday to mark the 39th anniversary of the declaration of National Unity, the Saharawi community asked the UN and international organizations of human rights to “urgently” act to establish a mechanism protecting the Saharawi people from Morocco’s oppression.

Holding Morocco responsible for the death of the Saharawi political prisoner, Hasana El-Ouali, the statement called for “an independent and prompt” investigation into his death.

Members of the Saharawi Community in the UK also called for “a democratic, free and impartial” referendum in accordance with the pertinent UN resolutions so that the Saharawi people be able to exercise their legitimate right self-determination.

They, on other hand, reiterated their attachment to the Polisario Front as a sole and legitimate representative of the Saharawi people.

The celebration also marks the 4th anniversary of the dismantling of Gdeim Izik camp and the National Day of Al-Jaima (Tent). (SPS)
