Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), November 22, 2014 (SPS) - Saharawi activist and president of the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA), Aminetou Haidar, condemned Friday the arbitrary arrests, torture and use of violence by Morocco against the Sahrawi population in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
According to the daily “eldiario.es,” the presidentof CODESA, called on the United Nations "to establish a competent and effective monitoring mechanism so these rights are respected," adding that since it was established in the region in 1991, "MINURSO has failed to monitor and protect human rights."
She addressed the issue of the illegal exploitation of Sahrawi natural resources, stressing that “the resources should be under the sovereignty of the Saharawi people,” and that "the looting is carried out with the complicity of Morocco’s western partners, including Spain."
She recalled the date of her arrest by Morocco "Today, November 21, is a day I cannot forget, because on this date 27 years has passed since I was imprisoned by the Moroccan regime." (SPS)
