International conference in Melbourne considers pillage of Saharawi natural resources "violation of international law"

 Melbourne (Australia), March 22, 2015 (SPS) The participants in the international conference held 19 - 20 March, in Melbourne on the natural resources of Western Sahara, considered Saturday the exploitation of Saharawi natural resources by Morocco and international companies "flagrant violation of international law."  

 

 The speakers emphasized the role the United Nations should play in protecting the wealth of the Western Sahara, a territory under the responsibility of the UN pending its decolonization through a self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people.

 

The Polisario Front representative in Australia, Kamal Fadel, made a detailed presentation on the efforts of the SADR to stop the systematic looting by Morocco of Western Sahara resources and the recovery of sovereignty over the entire country, highlighting the positive role of natural resources in the establishment of peace and stability in the region.

 

 For her part, Sahrawi human rights activist Sultana Khaya presented a damning testimony on violations, repression and abuse suffered by Saharawis in the occupied territories of Western Sahara by the Moroccan police officers and troops supported by the intelligence services.

 

The participants discussed ways and means for the protection of Western Sahara natural resources and the role of wealth in building independent Sahrawi state, it should be recalled. (SPS)
