Western Sahara: Morocco under pressure to resume talks with Polisario Front

Tifariti (liberated zones) - Morocco is subjected to pressure from friendly countries to resume negotiations with the Polisario Front, the speaker of Saharawi National Assembly, Khatri Adduh, said in Tifariti, urging the United Nations to assume its responsibilities and speed up the decolonization process in Western Sahara.

“Morocco is subjected to pressure from its friendly countries to lift its reservations over the resumption of talks. They explained (to Rabat ) that its inflexibility and negative position would result in a UN reaction considering it (Morocco) as responsible for the standstill in the process as it happened in 2006,” the Saharawi official said at a press briefing on the sidelines of the military manoeuvres organized by Saharawi Peoples’ Liberation Army.

“Morocco seems to have lifted its reservations over a possible resumption of negotiations, including direct contacts with the Saharawi side,” Adduh said.

“UN chief's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, has been in the region to consult the two parties about a probable round of direct talks in May, under the aegis of the United nations.”

“Negotiations, which are part of the fight for independence, stopped in April 2012 following Morocco's proposal to consider autonomy as a basis for dialogue,” he recalled.

Morocco's proposal is “unacceptable for Saharawi State and people.” (SPS)
