Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), April 7, 2015 (SPS) - The Frente Polisario on Monday applauded, through its National Secretariat’s Bureau, the historic decision on Western Sahara adopted by the African Union Peace and Security Council on 27 March 2015, welcoming the concrete steps came up with.

In a meeting under chairmanship of the President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, the Bureau hailed the recent decision by AU Peace and Security Council in reactivating the ad hoc Committee of Heads of State and Government on the conflict in Western Sahara, establishing International Contact Group for Western Sahara (ICG-WS), and deciding to review the issue on regular basis.

Lamenting for Moroccan continued occupation and incomplete decolonization of Western Sahara, the communiqué affirmed the right of the Saharawi people to independence and to have their own natural resources protected.

It warned of the threats to peace and security in the region due to the absence of a concrete genuine position by the international community against the policy of intransigence and obstruction, human rights violations, aggression, expansion, the production and export of drugs and encouraging organized crime gangs and terrorist groups pursued by Moroccan occupying state.

“A solution to the conflict of Western Sahara can only be done within its legal and political framework set forth in the Charter and the resolutions of the United Nations, through decolonization by enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, like all colonial peoples and countries,” stated the communiqué.

Taking note of the responsibility of the UN and Spain towards the decolonization process in Western Sahara, the Frente Polisario called on the UN Secretary General and Security Council to “effectively” engage in AU efforts and endeavors. (SPS)
