New York (UN), April 13, 2015 (SPS) - The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon affirmed that the Security Council and the international community could play a “decisive” role in resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.
In a report on Western Sahara sent Friday to the Security Council, Ban Ki-moon said he is “convinced” that the “Security Council and international community can play a decisive role in resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.”
“It is important that the Security Council, the parties to the conflict and the neighbouring countries support the mission of the special envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, in this situation to speed up the negotiation process,” said UN secretary general.
Ban Ki-moon called on the parties to the conflict (Morocco and Polisario Front) to redouble efforts to negotiate a fair political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people their right to self-determination, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and mechanisms.
“There has been no progress in the settlement of the conflict of Western Sahara, and in the negotiations since the report of 2014,” lamented Ban Ki-moon, affirming that “40 years after the start of this conflict (...) there is no reason to maintain the status quo.” (SPS)
