Dakhla (Refugee Camps), December 21, 2015 (SPS) The general status of the Polisario Front has undergone amendments, including inter alia, the criterion of military seniority and age of 45 years at least to be candidate for the post of the Secretary-General which should now be elected directly by the delegates, said Sunday in Dakhla, the spokesperson of the Congress, Omar Mansour.

"It has been decided, during the adoption of the resolutions on the general status of the Frente Polisario, that the Secretary-General be elected directly by the delegates, and not by members of the permanent Secretariat as set forth in the former status," explained Mr. Omar Mansour in a press conference on the 5th day of the Congress of the Frente Polisario.

The delegates demanded, following a long debate, according to the same source, "the military character to qualify to run for the post of the Secretary general," adding that the age to be a candidate for this position is set at more than 45 years.

Concerning the election of the permanent Secretariat of the Polisario Front, the spokesperson said that each candidate to the secretariat should have two-thirds of the votes in the first round, and more than 50% plus a vote in the second round, indicating that the application age was set at 30 and without term limits.

The delegates have imposed a quota of at least four women in the permanent secretariat, he said, adding that the immunity of the members of this body of the political leadership of the Polisario Front has been lifted, specifying however that it is maintained for parliamentarians.

The delegates of the congress also adopted a proposal for the integration of the Political Secretariat (the central political organ) in the Permanent Secretariat of the Polisario Front, which reinforces it and assigns it the executive prerogatives of control, explained Mansour Omar.

The delegates will review and adopt, in the evening, the reports of the Committee of Program of National Action, Messages, Recommendations, and Final Declaration.

The spokesperson indicated, moreover, that the work of the congress will "probably" be extended due to delay recorded before starting the designation operation by the delegates of a new political leadership of the Polisario Front. (SPS)
