Western Sahara: UN announces Ban Ki-moon’s visit to region

Washington (U.S.A), 27 February 2016 (SPS) -The United Nations (UN) confirmed Friday, the visit of its Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to the region, and which will lead him to Algiers and Nouakchott as well as te Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf.

 

After two visit scheduled for the first of March to Spain, and the 3rd of March to Burkina Faso, Ban Ki-moon will start, on March 4th, his tour to the region by Nouakchott where he will meet Mauritanian government leaders and deliver a key note speech on peace and security in the Sahel region, said UN spokesman, Christophe Dujarric in a press briefing held in New York.

 

The UN Secretary General will then go to the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf and will meet with the secretary-general of the Polisario Front, meet Mohamed Abdelaziz.

 

In Tindouf, Ban Ki-Moon will also meet with UN staff working in the area.

 

From Tindouf, the UN Secretary General will visit the Bir Lahlou team site of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

 

Finally, on 6 and 7 March, the secretary-general will be in Algiers to meet senior government officials.

 

In Algiers, “the secretary-general is also expected to open the 5th General Assembly of the Kigali International Conference on the role of security forces in combating violence against women and girls, and give a speech to university students,” said Dujarric. (SPS)
