Press conference by Minister of Foreign Affairs on latest developments regarding Sahrawi issue

Shaheed El-Hafedh, October 23, 2024 (SPS) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Sidati, held a press conference on Wednesday at the Archives of the Ministry of Communication regarding the latest developments concerning Western Sahara, attended by the Algerian and Sahrawi press.

The Minister reviewed the victories achieved by the Sahrawi people, particularly the recent rulings of the European Court of Justice, the latest resolution of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, and the participation of the Sahrawi Republic as a full member and founding member of the African Union in African partnership forums with other nations.

In this context, the Minister emphasized that the Fourth Committee reaffirmed the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, which calls upon the United Nations to respect this resolution and work towards its implementation while assuming its responsibility in the decolonization of Western Sahara, as well as leading the UN to protect the inalienable rights of the Sahrawi people.

Regarding the recent rulings of the European Court of Justice, the Minister pointed out that the content of these rulings was very clear; they affirm the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and annul the agreements between the European Union and Morocco that included Western Sahara. He stated that no agreement could be concluded without the consent of the rightful owner of the territory, namely the Sahrawi people through their legitimate representative, the Polisario Front.

These rulings represent a setback for Morocco and the European Union as the largest political and economic bloc and simultaneously reinforce human rights, legal aspects, and the position of the Sahrawi people, as it is a decision that cannot be appealed, clarified the Sahrawi head of diplomacy.

The minister also discussed the situation on the ground, highlighting the continuation of combat actions undertaken by the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army since Morocco violated the ceasefire.

Regarding the situation in the occupied territories, the minister underscored that the occupation has intensified its systematic policy against Sahrawi citizens in the occupied territories, which goes beyond repression and the plundering of natural resources to a policy of land and property confiscation from the Sahrawis.
