Nairobi (Kenya) 17 October 2024 (SPS)- The Communist Party of Kenya (CPK) strongly endorsed the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) invalidating agreements between Morocco and the European Union (EU) that exploit the natural resources of Western Sahara.
In a statement issued by its Central Organizing Committee (COC) Yesterday and published on its official Website, the CPK described the ruling as a pivotal moment in the Saharawi people’s fight for independence and their inalienable right to self-determination.
The CPK’s statement highlights that the ECJ’s decision affirms that Morocco has no sovereignty over Western Sahara and, as such, cannot legally engage in agreements that exploit the territory's resources.
This ruling, according to the CPK, is a vital step toward justice and reinforces the international recognition of the Saharawi people's struggle, which has persisted since 1975 when Spain withdrew from the region, leading to Morocco’s continued occupation after Mauritania pulled out in 1979.
The CPK expressed its condemnation of the EU’s ongoing attempts to circumvent this ruling and continue exploiting Western Sahara's natural resources in violation of international law.
The party’s statement called upon African nations, especially those with revolutionary traditions, to take a stand in support of the Saharawi cause.
The CPK also urged the Kenyan government to strengthen its solidarity with the Saharawi people by aligning itself with this international legal precedent.
The statement from the CPK framed the struggle of the Saharawi people as an integral part of the wider African battle against neocolonialism and imperialism.
The CPK reaffirmed its Pan-Africanist principles, asserting that the fight for the liberation of Western Sahara is deeply connected to broader efforts to liberate all oppressed African nations from exploitation and domination.
In closing the CPK reiterated its unwavering stance that “there is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without independence!” (SPS)
