EYP calls on the EU and the US to respect International law in Western Sahara

Zagreb (Croatia) 25 August 2024 (SPS)- The European Youth Parliament (EYP) called on the United States of America, European Union commission and its member states to respect the international law in Western Sahara and Palestine, in a Motion to the European Commission, this week.

The Motion entitled “Motion for a resolution by the committee of Foreign Affairs” tackles the relations between the European Union and the US, and the need for both to uphold the values and principles of Human rights and international legality in all their interactions and positions on international issues.

EYP estimated that “the EU has not condemned the US’ handling of international affairs even if some Member States have openly questioned legal, and values-based aspects of such affairs, as in the case of Israel and Palestine, and Western Sahara”.

In this respect, the Motion “urges the US State Department to respect international law as outlined by the International Bill of Human Rights, as well as other international treaties such as the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination”.

It should be noted that the European Youth Parliament is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering active citizenship and cultural awareness among young Europeans. Established in Fontainebleau, France, in 1987, it engages approximately 25,000 young people annually through its events and maintains a network of around 6,000 active members across various countries. As a politically neutral entity, it aims to inspire and involve European youth in meaningful dialogue and collaboration. (SPS)
