Fourth Committee's reaffirmation of legal framework for Western Sahara issue is strong and clear response to occupying state

New York (United States), October 16, 2023 (SPS) - In an interview with the Sahrawi National Television Sunday, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, emphasized that the Fourth Committee of the United Nations, in its recent resolution reaffirming the legal framework for the Western Sahara issue as a decolonization issue and the responsibility of the international community towards the Sahrawi people, constitutes a strong and clear response to the attempts by the Moroccan occupying state to distort the legal nature of the Sahrawi issue.

Regarding a question about the recent report presented by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Security Council, the Sahrawi diplomat pointed out that the report outlines a series of field and political developments related to the Western Sahara issue. He particularly drew attention to the issue of human rights and the visit of the Personal Envoy to the occupied Sahrawi territories, as well as the Secretary-General's confirmation of the continuation of "military operations" between the parties, which refutes the propaganda of the Moroccan occupying state that continues to deny the reality of the aggressive war it wages against the Sahrawi people since it violated the ceasefire on 13 November 2020.

In response to a question about the closed consultations expected to be held Monday by the Security Council, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar indicated that the consultations will primarily be informative, where the Council will receive briefings from both the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, and the Special Representative and Head of MINURSO, Mr. Alexander Ivanko. Meanwhile, the member states of the Council will provide their statements regarding the briefings and the Secretary-General's report on the situation in Western Sahara.

In this context, the representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO reaffirmed once again the willingness of the Sahrawi party to cooperate with the efforts of the United Nations and the African Union towards completing the decolonization process in Western Sahara, parallel to the ongoing struggle of the Sahrawi people through all legitimate means to achieve their sacred goals of freedom, independence, and the exercise of sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Republic.
