Submitted on

Smara (Refugee Camps), Feb 26, 2018 (SPS) - The festivities of the second day for the celebration of the 42nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) were marked by a rich and varied programme comprising notably the organization of the Marathon of Sahara and a symbolic referendum on the Sahrawi people’s self-determination.
The referendum on self-determination was organized on the sidelines of the International Conference of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People in their peaceful resistance.
“We called for a symbolic vote to give the Sahrawi people the possibility to claim their inalienable right to self-determination and underline the real existence of SADR,” said Abdeslam Omar, president of the international organization for Sahrawi prisoners, in charge of the organization of Referendum.
Abdeslam said that the organization of this referendum which marks the 134 years of Spanish then Moroccan occupation, coincides with the recent positions and measures taken by the African Union (AU) and also with the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), stipulating that Morocco is unquestionably an occupying State and that only the Sahrawi people can decide their own future.
Several guests coming from several countries participated in the symbolic ballot, notably from Europe, Latin America, United State and Africa. The event’s organizers, Sahrawi population and representatives of media also took part in this ballot. (SPS)
