Addis Ababa, 20 February 2023 (SPS) - The 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, which concluded shortly, rejected the adoption of the so-called Tangiers Declaration and decided to return it to the policy organs of the African Union for reconsideration.
This maneuver by Morocco aims to impose the so-called “Tangiers Declaration" in an attempt to institutionalize it, and to twist the arm of the African Union, and to create another platform for Moroccan propaganda and its expansionist policy against its neighbors, especially the Sahrawi Republic, a founding member of the African Union.
This step is considered a complete failure for the Kingdom of Morocco, whose delegation was headed by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and accompanied by Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs and other officials. As usual, Morocco did not hesitate to resort to the policy of intimidation and bribery, did so openly in various hotels and the corridors of the Summit.
Morocco’s diplomacy has experienced another failure and was not able to change the position on Africa's strategic partnerships. It also failed to pass an erroneous paragraph related to the situation of human rights during the meeting of the Executive Council.
The presence of the Sahrawi Republic was visible during the meetings of the African Union summit. It confronted with force and firmness all the Moroccan maneuvers that did not find an echo in African Union. This confirms Sahrawi Republic’s position within the African continent as an important force for unity, liberation and development as outlined the goals and aspirations contained in the African Union Agenda 2063.
