Windhoek (Namibia) 24 July 2019 (SPS)- The World Federation of Democratic Youth-African Regional Commission (WFDY-ARC) issued an urgent Medias Release on Wednesday, condemning Moroccan oppression against the people of Western Sahara these last few days and calling on all progressive organizations to adopt firm position against the Moroccan violations.
In its release signed by the Vice-President of the WFDY, Mr. Naftali Kambungu, the Commission “calls for all progressive youth organisations in Africa and the world to take a firm stand against Moroccan human rights abuses and brutality in Western Sahara”, and “condemn all human rights abuses committed by Moroccan forces against the Sahrawi people.”
The Commission also indicated it “is worried about the unprecedented barbaric and diabolic activities which are being carried out by the Moroccan authorities in Western Sahara with no remorse to the international law,” considering that “the youth of Africa can no longer digest the current status quo of Western Sahara being the last colony of Africa, we need it as an independent state.”
To this end, the youth Commission appealed “to the United Nations and the African Union to intervene immediately in Western Sahara and find a long and lasting solution” to this last case of decolonization in Africa.
The text further considers that it seems that the UN and AU are far from been active in trying to resolve this issue, since the WFDY “is not seeing deliberate actions being taken to put necessary pressure on Morocco in several years now by the UN and AU and we are worried about the tolerance level of the people on the ground taking cognizance of what is happening in other parts of the world in regards to conflict management.”
Therefore, WFDY- ARC calls for “the freedom and self-determination of the Sahrawi people and the full structured and settled Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as an independent state from Moroccan occupation.”
Criticizing the Moroccan colonial expansionism in Western Sahara, the Commission estimated that “Africa should no longer be a playground of imperialist maneuver, thus we call for the bringing to an end of all imperialist activities in the continent and demand the freedom of Africa in totality without exception.”
The text further indicates that “the commission is deeply concerned and taken serious note of the retaliatory response by the Moroccan police, auxiliary forces and army against the Sahrawi youth. Besides the assassination of the young Sahrawi, Sabah Othman Ahmeida, being run over by a vehicle of the Moroccan auxiliary forces, there is also serious injuries inflicted to more than 200 Sahrawi youth with rubber bullets, tear gas canisters, and other unspecified ammunitions and in addition to that, is the arrest of more than 80 young people.”
