CEE Alliance calls attention of Polish government about Moroccan continued human rights abuses in occupied Western Sahara

Budapest (Poland) July 22, 2011 (SPS) - In a letter addressed Friday to the prime minister of Poland, the Central and Eastern European Alliance for Solidarity with the Saharawi People (CEE Alliance) has called the attention of the Polish government about the continued and systematic human rights abuses and to the ongoing plunder of Western Sahara’s natural resources.

CEE Alliance expressed hope for Poland, after it took over the EU Presidency from Hungary, to strongly commit to the universal human rights, shares the European values and respects all peoples’ right to self-determination, including right of the Western Sahara people to self determination and freedom, confirming that the advanced status of Morocco given by the EU “reflects a serious contradiction with the sacred values of the European Union.”

It emphasized that the ongoing vents in the Middle East and Northern Africa “have demonstrated clearly that any political solution in Western Sahara must reflect the will of its people if it is to be credible, sustainable, and foster peace, security and regional integration in the long term.”

CEE Alliance reiterates that both for the UN and the African Union the objective of the political process is the long-overdue decolonization of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara through a process of self determination of the people of Western Sahara. This referendum should include independence, integration and autonomy.

The letter underlined that Morocco’s unilaterally-imposed solution (autonomy plan)” is incompatible with the Security Council’s formula for a mutually acceptable political solution.”

It noted that the Moroccan authorities have instituted a “significant crackdown on freedom of speech in the territory targeting Saharawi human rights defenders in a manner inconsistent with Morocco’s international human rights treaty obligations.”
CEE Alliance finally expressed hope that the EU will address the cause of Western Sahara to be resolved on the basis of implementation of the UN and international legality’s resolutions. (SPS)
