Angola attaches great importance to decolonization and self determination in Western Sahara

United Nations (New York), Oct 11, 2011 (SPS) - The Permanent representative of Angola to the United Nations, Mr. Ismael Abraão Gaspar Martins, said Tuesday in New York that his country “attaches great importance to decolonization and self determination of peoples still under the domination of other states, as is the case, in Africa, with Western Sahara”.

Speaking before the UN General Assembly's decolonization committee, Ambassador Martins reaffirmed his country’s firm position in supporting the just right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence

“Angola joins the group of countries that support and encourage the materializations of the legitimate aspirations of the Saharawi people” Mr. Martins underlined.

He recalled “the Angolan government understands that the subjugation of people in the middle of the twenty-first century has no reason to be,” expressing support to the efforts by the United Nations that contributes to the liberations of countries and the peoples under the colonial rule.

The Angolan diplomat expressed regret that Africa is still debating the question of Western Sahara which is under the control of Morocco, and fighting for self-determination.

"United Nations resolution 1514 constitutes an optimal basis for solution leading to the decolonization of this territory , and put an end to human rights violations that the Saharawi people is subjected to", Mr. Martins highlighted.

He therefore encouraged the two parties to the conflict to negotiate and continue to flex their positions, expressing hope for the implementation of Security Council resolution 1449 in July 31 2003, to enforce the agreements reached between the Polisario Front and Morocco. (SPS)
