Algiers, Oct 30, 2011 (SPS) - “The African Union still supports the people of Western Sahara in their struggle for their right to self-determination,” said Saturday in the Algerian capital the AU Commissioner for Social Affairs, Ms. Bience Philomena Gawanas.

In a speech to the press during the 2nd International Conference on the Peoples’ Right to Resistance: case of the Saharawi People, Ms. Gawanas said “I come to Algeria to express the solidarity of the African Union and peoples with struggle waged by the Saharawi people for independence.”

“Africa will not be completely free, unless Western Sahara obtains its independence,” she added, pointing out that AU will not spare any effort to see the Saharawi people get its inalienable right of self-determination.

The African official deplored the systematic looting of Western Sahara natural resources by the Moroccan occupation.

The 2nd international conference on the peoples’ right to resistance: case of the Saharawi people is attended by representatives of NGOs organs and organizations from Europe, America, Africa and Asia, in addition to political, intellectual and university figures.

It aims to condemn the gross and repeated violations of human rights in the occupied territories.

The Conference, which is sponsored by the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Saharawi People, will issue a final statement appealing to the UN to speedily implement the resolutions that call for conducting transparent and fair self-determination referendum under the UN auspices.
