Stockholm (Denmark), Nov 13, 2011 (SPS) - Five Danish organizations and two parliamentarians called on their country to pressure Morocco to save lives of the Saharawi political prisoners, who are currently holding hunger strike in the Sale jail since last October 31, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Mr. Sovndahl Willy, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navanethem Pillay.

The letter called for the immediate and unconditional release of the 23 Saharawi hunger strikers prisoners, saying “we believe they are arrested as a result for protesting and demanding their rights.”

It also called on Foreign Minister of Denmark and High Commissioner for Human Rights to “take all necessary measures in order to ensure the physical and psychological protection for the prisoners,” calling them to intervene for liberating all the Saharawi political detainees in Moroccan jails.

It therefore stressed on the need to enable the Saharawi human rights defenders to exercise their legitimate task in monitoring the state of human rights without any fear or harassment and in complete freedom,

The letter was signed by the Danish Organization of Woman and Development, Danish Aid Organization for Development, Afrika Kontakt, Tukai Denmark, EU Deputy, Søren Søndergaard and the member of Danish Parliament Christian Johl. (SPS)
