Brussels, Feb 8, 2012 (SPS) - The European Parliament's Intergroup for Western Sahara Wednesday has called on the EU to act urgently against the "intolerable situation" of the Saharawi refugees due to the lack of effective humanitarian aid.

In a statement, MPs expressed concern over the "alarming situation" of the Saharawi refugees living under the lack of effective humanitarian aid. "There is a dire need to act urgently to stop this intolerable situation," they warned.

Signed by four MEPs from the European Parliament Intergroup forWestern Sahara, The statement came following a meeting with Red Cross experts working in the refugee camps.

MEPs stated they will ask for a meeting with the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva, in order to "take necessary steps to promote the refugees situation".

They also complained that the Humanitarian aid provided to those refuges became forgotten by the international community. "The humanitarian aid donated by UN and EU is not sufficient to response to the refugee needs."

According to UN, the current humanitarian aid covers only 30% of the refugees needs the fact that they receive $ 8 million while they need at least $32 million.(SPS)
