French Euro MP intends to go to EC against inclusion of Western Sahara in EU-Morocco agriculture agreement

Madrid, Feb 9, 2012 (SPS) - French Euro parliamentarian, José Bové, expressed on Wednesday, his firm opposition to the renovation of the free trade agreement between the EU and Morocco, stressing g that the agreement violates international law because it includes Western Sahara.


Supported by many of colleagues, Bové underlined he will raise a case before the European Court against a possible adoption of the agreement, next week, by the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.


During a press conference with representatives of the Spanish and French farmers, the most affected by this agreement, the MP explained the reasons for his opposition to such agreement which Spain called it "unbalanced" and "prejudicial" to its interests.


Mr. Bove considers the agreement as to the violation international law the fact "the majority of farms are in the Moroccan occupied Western Sahara, a territory which its legal status is not yet decided in UN agenda . The royal family is the largest owner of agricultural land in Dakhla. "


Moreover, the Franco-Spanish initiative on the renewal of the Fisheries Agreement EU-Morocco, signed in February 2007 and who manages to expire at the end of this month, has met on Tuesday to the same political reasons, trade and environment, the hostility of the Left parties and nationalist Basque.


MPs insisted on respect for human rights in occupied Western Sahara and to international law that excludes any resource of a non-autonomous territory.


European MPs, headed by Mr. stated that the Saharawi population does not benefit €36.1 million paid by EU to Morocco for the exploitation of Western Sahara fishing resources.(SPS)
