Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), March 30, 2012 (SPS) - The Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations, Bukhari Ahmed, said on Thursday that France is the "main obstacle" to a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper "El Dia", Bukhari Ahmed has underlined “France is the main obstacle to self-determination referendum in Western Sahara more than Morocco itself", adding “it is primarily responsible for the tragedy and failure of the United Nations in Western Sahara."

The Saharawi diplomat asserted the reason behind achieving no progress in ninth round of informal talks between the Polisario Front and Morocco, is "the Moroccan position which does not allow any progress."

"Violence and of human rights violation is the daily bread," said Bukhari, referring to the current situation in the Occupied Territories , stressing that "this tragedy occur under the cover of impunity, which guarantees the absence of witnesses or international observers who cannot enter the territory because Morocco does not allow them."

In this regard, Member of national secretariat of Polisario Front stressed the need for UN action through  "establishment of a permanent mechanism to monitor and protect human rights in the region." (SPS)
